Clinical Observation for the 72 Cases of Diabetes Melltitus

Abstract
|
|
|
From January, 1966 to December, 1967 we observed clinically 72 cases of diabetes mellitus at the department of Internal Medicine of the Chonnam University Medical School.
The incidence of diabetics among all out and in patients who.visited the Department was 0.49 per cent, showing 1.4 to 1 male famle ratio, and the most prevalent age group was 4th decade.
Obesity was found in 26 per cent of cases, and the more obese the lower the fasting blood sugar level and the better the responsiveness for therapy. Familial incidence suggesting hereditary nature of the disease was found in 4.1 per cent, but in the 36 per cent of the cases we could not found any possible etiologci factors.
Common subjective complaints on the first examination were thirst (57%), polyuria (48%), weakness (43%), weight loss (2501o) and polyphagia (25%) .
The fasting blood sugar levels were over 150m0/o in 74% of the cases and under 130mg% in 7%.
As the common complication of the disease we observed peripheral neuropathies in 25% of the cases, pulmonary tuberculosis 17%, diabetic retinopathy 15%, arteriosclerotic changes with hypertension 13%, and nephropathy and liver cirrhosis 10% in each.
For the various theraphies 23 admission cases showed favorable responses, but 12 cases showed very poor responses.
